Hugelkultur is happening at Hillside!

We took all the logs from the cut down trees on site and utilized them to create a planting bed for on-site food cultivation for our residents.

Hugelkultur is a gardening technique that uses logs and organic materials to create raised beds. It is a sustainable and self-sufficient farming practice that offers numerous benefits for on-site food cultivation. The logs from cut-down trees on the site are utilized to construct the planting bed, providing a natural and resourceful solution for residents4.

Hugelkultur beds have several advantages for growing food. Firstly, they help build soil fertility by using rotting wood as a host for beneficial fungi, bacteria, insects, worms, and microbial growth that create nutrients for plants to thrive3. Additionally, these beds retain moisture effectively, which is beneficial for plant growth and reduces the need for frequent watering.

The raised nature of hugelkultur beds maximizes surface volume, allowing for more planting space in a limited area. Utilizing the logs and organic materials, the bed gradually decomposes over time, creating a constant source of organic matter that enriches the soil5.

Hugelkultur is widely used in gardening and farming practices because it supports self-sufficiency in food production. It offers a sustainable solution for on-site food cultivation, allowing residents to have access to fresh produce while minimizing their environmental impact.
